Shuttle Badminton and Carrom Board Player, Sprinter and Former Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise Department Sri. I. Chellam, M.Com .

Introduction   :   Former  Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise Department Sri. I. Chellam. M.Com, is a symbol of hard work, perseverance, consistency, hope and honesty and  by his inherent  intelligence,  mental grit  and consistent hard work he achieved greatness in life. and brought laurels  and joy to his parents, family and Kanyakumari district.  Though he was born in an unknown tiny village and  in a middle class family , he became a first generation Post Graduate   in his  village. . His profile tells the truth that hard work  and hope  will take anybody to enviable  places in life  like him

Mr I. Chellam's  Parents and Birth   Ambilikonam is one of the beautiful idyllic villages in Thovalai Taluk in Kanyakumari District and it lies on the northern end of Thovalai Taluk and in this beautiful village many decades ago there lived a honest man by name Mr. S. Iyappilai  and he married a modest young woman by name Ms Yesuvadial from Kadambadivizhagam village[ Currently many natives of this village  are living and working in USA as professionals] and after their marriage this couple settled in an enchanting  nearby village called Gnanam .  Mr. S. Iyappillai and Ms Yesuvadial Iyappillai  couple gave birth to their boy child  Mr..Chellam on the 23rd January 1959 at Gnanam village. 

Mr. I .Chellam's Siblings   :   God blessed  Mr S. Iyappillai and Ms. Yesuvadial Iyappillai couple with  all the conjugal blessings and this blissful couple gave birth to the following children namely ;  [1] Mr.I. Shanmugam  and he married  Ms Padma [first wife] and this couple gave birth to the following children namely : [a] Sheeja and [b] Sheebu. Mr Shanmugam again married  another woman by name Ms Selvi and this couple gave birth  to Mr Esakkiappan , [2]  Mr. I.Mohan, and he married Ms Kanagam from Chemponkari village and this couple gave birth to the following children namely [a] Ms. Ezhil, M.E and she was married to  Mr. Ajith Singh and Ajith  Singh worked in Trivandrum Air Port , Security section , and [b]  Mr. Ajith Kumar and he worked in the C.I. S. F , [3]   Mr. I. Chellam [ He is the Hero of this Article ] and [4] Ms . I. Indra and she married Mr Durai and this couple gave birth to the following children namely [a] Ms Mathavi, B.A, [b] Mr Yesuraj and he worked in the Corporation of Mumbai. 

Mr. I.  Chellam's Educational Tract   :       Mr. I. Chellam  did his Primary school Education at the Government Primary School at Gnanam and did  his 6th and 7th standard studies at the Arumanallur Govt High School and then  he joined the famous S.L. B High School at Nagercoil and passed his S.S.L.C in the year 1976.. After having passed his S.S.L.C with flying colours Mr. I. Chellam joined the famous ST Hindu College at Nagercoil and passed his P.U.C examination meritoriously and pursued his B.Com in the same college and passed his B.Com  in the year 1979 with high marks . Then he pursued his M.Com in the same ST Hindu College and passed his M.Com in the year 1981 meritoriously .

Beginning of  Mr Chellam's Professional Career   :    Mr. I. Chellam   passed his  Central Service Commission examination and joined the Customs and Central Excise Department as U.D.C, on  27th February 1982. at the Viruthunagar  Customs and central Excise Office. Afterwards there was no turning back  and after some years  he was promoted as Inspector of  Customs and Central Excise Department in the year 1989 and transferred to Sivakasi  .With great enthusiasm and efficacy he had been working as Inspector of Customs and Central Excise Department  for many years 

Mr.  I. Chellam , M.Com married Ms Santhi  Vijaya Sree , B. Sc    :  It is not good for a  man to live alone and he should seek eligible and suitable Life Partner  and so Mr Chellam, M.Com married Ms Santhi Vijaya Sree , B.Sc, daughter of Mr P. Selvanayagam { He retired as Sub Inspector of Police ] and Ms J. Sarah Bai on the 29th  April, 1990 at Bairavi Kalyanamandapam , Nagercoil .

Mr. I. Chellam and Ms Santhi Vijaya Sree Couple's  Children   :    Mr I. Chellam and Ms Santhi Vijaya Sree couple  is blessed with all the connubial blessings and this couple gave birth to the  following children namely : [1] Mr. Aravind Chellam ,and he after having passed his B.E[ Mechanical], he pursued his M.S { Production Engineering] at the famous Jonkoping University in  Smaland in Sweden and passed his M.S with flying colours . Currently he is doing his M.B.A,  at the prestigious Arun Jaitley  National  Institute of  Financial Management [AJNIFM], Hariyana and [2]  Ms. Ayswaria Chellam , she passed her  B.E [Electronics and Communications]  in 2015 and then pursued her MBA at the prestigious I.I.M[ Nagpur] and passed her M.B.A in the year 2018 with flying colours  . Currently she is working as Business Development Officer  in the famous  Flipkart.  Company.[ A subsidiary Company of the famous Wall Mart Company, US] 

Mr. I. Chellam was Promoted as Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise Dept  : Sri. I Chellam, M.Com had been serving his department with great devotion and efficacy and he was promoted as Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise Department  and he assumed charge as Superintendent on the 25th January 2003  at  the Commissionerate of Customs and Central Excise , Tirunelveli . Mr I. Chellam  served as  Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise in Tutucorin, Thenkasi , and Nagercoil Range offices.  While he was working as the Superintendent of Customs and Central Excise, in the Nagercoil Range Office  his area of operation covered the  whole of Kanyakumari District and Nanguneri taluk and Radhapuram taluk of Tirunelveli district also. .  After having served the Customs and Central Excise Department for nearly three decades with great distinction he retired from service  in January 2019.

Conclusion  :  Currently after his retirement from service  Mr. I  Chellam , M. Com has been living happily with his wife and children  at his beautiful house in  Nagercoil.  He is very calm , intelligent, unassuming  and  is very fluent both in English and Tamil . He has a natural inclination towards Tamil Literature. . He is physically and mentally very strong.and is a talented Shuttle Badminton and Carrom Board player  and Sprinter and had bagged many medals in the  Sport events  conducted by the Department..  According to me  he deserved even greater promotions and places in his professional career . His loving smart wife and brilliant and worthy Children are the joy of his life  and definitely he can be proud of his children's enviable educational accomplishments and their good behaviour and nature. .  It is not possible to cover all the aspects of prolific  life story in a single Article . I will call him a shining and galvanising  Milestone  for his achievements ,  unassuming qualities and amiable nature.

Writer , Evangelist, Pastor and Famous Tamil Christian Poet Rev. George Vedanayagam and his Illustrious Children and Families . . Part A .

Introduction   : Outstanding  Evangelist, powerful Christian Minister  and Author of some immortal Christian literary works namely "Sarguru Sathaham", 'Nenjuru Kadkam","Mather kummi",  "Adavar kummi"," Amalaguru Sathaham", "Paralokarachiya Paamalai", "Nithiyanantha Kaathal" etc, and some inspiring popular Tamil Christian  lyrics namely "Arasanaikkaanaamal Iruppupoma", "Iya Vumathu Sitham Aakidava Vaanum" etc, was a great man of God and  his contribution for the cause of school education, Christian Tamil literature, social justice and spiritual edification of the people deserves our recognition  appreciation and admiration. Definitely the manifold contributions made by his family members and him, cover and  decorate some important and crucial Chapters of the educational, social  and religious  history of Tamil Nadu and India. .



Rev. George Vedanayagm's Parents and his  Birth   : Many decades ago there lived a smart man by name Mr Solaimalai at  an enchanting  hilly village called Natham Patti near Madurai town,  with his modest wife Ms Karuppayi Solaimalai  and to this blessed couple  a male child was born in the year 1868 and the parents named their child ," Nagaiya". During that period of time Christian  Missionary Rev. George Thomas Washburn [ Madura American Mission and he was the first Principal of  "Madurai American College" } and his wife Ms Eliza Washburn were doing Christian Missionary work in Pasumali, and its surrounding villages  including Natham Patti.   During those days  the young  boy Nagaiya's father  Mr. Solaimalai died due to a poisonous snake bite. In this situation the young Nagaiya was brought up under the custody of   Rev . G.T Washburn and his wife Ms Eliza.  Through Rev George Washburn , Mr. Nagaiah came to know  about Jesus Christ and when Nagaiah was doing his 12th year  he accepted Jesus  Christ as his God and saviour and changed  his name as George Vedanayagam. { Probably name  George in memory of Rev. George Washburn ] 

Rev. George Vedanayagam's  Academic and Religious Education  :Young George Vedanayagam was a brilliant student since his elementary school days and  Rev G.T. Washburn  encouraged and guided Mr George Vedanayagam  in his school studies  And studious George Vedanayagam passed his Matriculation examination meritoriously and then he pursued his three year Theological course and passed his theological course colourfully . After having passed his Theological course Mr. George Vedanayagam became a pastor in the Madura Mission and later he shifted to Madras  and worked  as a  Pastor  at the St Andrew's Church at Choolaimedu , Madras  and consequently this Church  used to be called as Vedanayam Iyer [ Priest ] Church .  

Rev. George Vedanayagam's Marriage and his  Children:   Rev. George Vedanayagam  was married to Ms Asirvathamal [ adopted daughter of Rev Chandler of Madura Mission ] at Vathalagundu  [ Batlagundu ] on the 8th January 1889 .   Rev. George Vedanayagam and Ms Asirvathamal George Vedanayagam couple gave birth  to the  following Children namely :-[1] Mr.  G.V.Job, [2] Ms. G.V. Elizabeth Charlotte Rungaswamy  , [3] Mr. G.V. Jeremiah , [4] Mr .G.V . Isaiah, [5] Mr G.V. Ezekiel, [6] Mr . G.V. Azariah, [7] Mr. G.V. Amos, [8] Ms. G.V Susannal .In this context I would like to deal only with two children of  Rev. George Vedanayagam namely :[1] Mr. George Vedanayam Job, M.A , L.T,  and [2] Mrs Elizabeth Chorlotte Rungaswamy, in this Article   

[A]Rev George Vedanayagam's Son Mr. George Vedanayagam Job, M.A, L.T and Family    :   Mr.. George Vedanayagam Job, M.A, L.T, married Ms Esther Job  and this couple gave birth to the following children namely : [1]  Ms. Jemmi Job Rajamanickam , [2] Ms. Leela Job, [3] Ms. Kirubavathi Job , [4] Mr. Samuel Vethanayagam Job , [5]  Commodre Dr. Chandran Job, M.B.B.S ,. Dr. Chandran Job married  Ms Abranam the eldest daughter of the famous Advocate Mr. Devadhas, B.A, B.L of  Thirukurungudi and Mrs.Abranam's mother Ms. Anna Muthu Devadhas  was a  native of Nagercoil , [6] Ms Sarojini Asirvatham and [7] Mr. Basil Gunaseelan . Sri. George Vedanayagam Job, M.A, L.T  was a great educationist and administrator  and he worked as the Principal of the Columbus High School at Chengalpattu  Mr. G.V. Job was a classmate of  India's second President Dr. S. Rdhakrishnan at the famous Madras Christain College, Thambaram and  the inspiring and thought provoking debates held on Christianity and Religion between Dr. S Radharakrishnan and Mr G.V Job attracted the attention of the many intellectuals of those days .  Mr G.V. Job was the first Indian General Secretary of the newly formed Church of South India  .

[B] Rev. George Vedanayagam's daughter Mrs. G.V.Elizabeth Charlotte Rungaswamy and Family   :  Rev. John Runguswamy and Rev George Vedanaygam were contemporaries  and were working as Christian missionaries in and around  Madras [ Chennai]  and  both of them were great friends .   Rev. John Rungaswamy  and Mrs Rebecca Gnanamuthu Rungaswamy couple gave birth to their eldest son namely Rev. Jesudasaen Wesley Samuel Rungaswamy on the 31st July 1888. Like his father Rev. Jesudasaen Wesley Samuel Rungaswamy  also became a Methodist Pastor and worked   as a  Methodist Minister at the Wesley Church Royapettah, All saints Church Triplicanae, Saint Luke's Church Mylapore etc.  He also had the privilege to work as a Chaplain in the  British Indian Army  for some years. Ms G.V Elizabeth Charlotte, daughter of Rev George Vedanayagam married Rev. Jesudasaen Wesley Samuel Rungaswamy. Rev. Jesudasaen Wesley Samuel Rungaswamy and Ms. G.V. Elizabeath Charlotte Rungaswamy couple gave birth to the following children namely : [1]  Mr. John Rungaswamy, [2] Ms. Gurnsey Isaiah , [3] Ms. Annie Arumainayagam [[4] Ms. Mercy Job, [5] Ms. Maida Charles , [6] Ms Elsie David  and [7] Mr George Vedanayagam ,[8] Mrs. Amy Jean Chandraleela Samuel, and [9] Mrs. Susanna Vasantha Chitha 


Conclusion    :  Christian poet and Pastor  Rev. George Vedanayagam and his Illustrious children and families were/are blessed with many spiritual and worldly gifts and talents . The life stories of Rev G.Vedanayagam and his illustrious children and families  deserve an enviable and eminent place in the Church and educational  history of  Chennai, Tamil Nadu and India . God has blessed their descendants  in a  conspicuous and constructive way and probably each one of  them  deserves a separate Write up about them . Christian Poet Rev George Vedanayagam even today is  remembered during our church services, when we sing his devotional Tamil songs and when we see the altars where upon he stood and preached his soul winning  sermons, spontaneously his memories fill our minds. . The Christian Literature Society, Chennai  { C.L.S } should come forward  to write and publish the  biographies of Rev. George Vedanayagam, his illustrious children and his eminent  son in law Rev. Jesudasaen Wesley Samuel Rungaswamy . I salute the great Tamil Christian Poet, Evangelist and Pastor late Rev G. Vedanayagam  with great gratitude, respect and joy  and I end this Article with a short sentence ,  " indeed late Rev.G. Vedanayagam was a great Man of God"
