Introduction
: Late Prof.Dr. Pauline Das of karunya
University, Coimbatore was one of the efficient University English Teachers of
India; and she enjoyed the spontaneous
love and respect of her students
and colleagues till her death She
was an inspiring personality , she was a good teacher , voracious reader,
fluent speaker and writer ; she
was beautiful, honest and a good
human-being. Definitely in her death, Indian Universities and student
community had lost a very efficacious and devoted English teacher. Definitely her achievements and way of life
would be an inspiring example for many to follow
Dr.
Pauline Das’ birth and Parents ; Prof Dr Puline Das was a native of Nagercoil
and she was born on 9th September 1960 as the youngest daughter to Military Engineer late Major. C. M.Das and Mrs Mariamma Das.
Her
Siblings: Her beloved parents Maj. CM
Das and Mrs.K.P Mariamma Das were
blessed with four children namely :[1] Dr. M.S.P. Sampath, M.B.B.S, [2] Ms
Merlin Lazarus, [3] Er. Mr. Irwin Jeya Suriya , B.E, and [4] late Prof. Dr.
Pauline Das .
Education
of Dr Pauline Das: Dr Pauline Das did her School studies at the famous St Joseph’s Convent Nagercoil and did her B.Sc and MA[English ]
in Scott Christian College , Nagercoil .
She was a brilliant student and was well liked by her Professors and lecturers and fellow students ,in Scott Christian
College. She was a brilliant student , after her M.A in English,[College topper ] she
successfully passed her M.Phil [ University topper], Madurai Kamaraj University and Ph.D , Bharathidasan University .
Her
married Life: Ms. Pauline Das married Mr Mohan, M.B.A, from Coimbatore and Ms.Pauline
and Mr.Mohan couple was blessed with a
beautiful and brilliant daughter by name Preetika. Paulin’s only daughter Preetika Mohan, B.Com, MBA [ITM-IFM
] is working as a Credit Analyst in a famous Multinational Financial
Institution.
Dr.
Pauline’s Teaching Career : Dr. Pauline Das was one of
the outstanding Alumni of Scott Christian College Nagercoil and was an active
member of the Alumni Association of Scott Christian College, Coimbatore Chapter
till her death in February 2016. She had been working as an Associate Professor
of English at Karunya University, Coimbatore from June 2007 till her sad and
untimely demise in February 2016. She taught
American Literature , Black Studies, British Literature , Common Wealth Literature, Australian
Literature , Criticism and English for
Media . She had 25 years of experience in teaching English Language and
literature. Before joining the English Department, in Karunya University, Coimbatore, she had the
privilege to work as English Lecturer in many important Colleges in Tamil
Nadu. Professor Dr. Pauline Das was
serving as a Member in the English Department Research Advisory Committee,
Karunya University. She had successfully
guided 2 Scholars [ Indian writing in English ] for M.Phil degrees and 3 Scholars for Ph.D in Canadian
Literature. She was an active member in
the Indian Association for Canadian studies [ IACS ] and she had presented and read some thought provoking Papers in the Seminars
and Conferences conducted by IACS, for example in the IACS conference conducted
in 2011 , Dr Pauline Das read a Paper on Women’s Empowerment in India and
Canada and compared Margaret Atwood’s Edible Women with that of Laxmi Kannan’s Tamil Novel “Going Home” . She was a
good researcher and writer also and some
of her research Articles had been published in the famous international English
Research Journls like The Criterion, Languages in India , etc,.
Conclusion; Dr. Pauline Das was really a colorful personality, she was a talented musician and underwent regular Piano studies while she was a student at St Joseph's Covent, Nagercoil and successfully completed her Piano course studies to the level of fifth or sixth grade She had served as Rotaract Club President in an enviable manner during her college days. She was very kind towards poor students and she had supported 9 poor students for their collegiate education and also she had been financially supporting many independent Churches in line with the teachings of Christ Before her untimely death. Dr. Pauline fought with her sickness with great tenacity and hope, however as we know life is not in human hands she died in February 2016 in Coimbatore. Her funeral was well attended by the students, staff of karunya University, relatives, friends and church members. Her funeral service was conducted by the then Bishop of Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church, Coimbatore and her body had been interred in the TELC main Church cemetery. in Coimbatore. Yes in her death the Karunya University had lost an efficient and devoted teaching staff and students had lost an efficacious and amiable Teacher and the family and Kanyakumari District and country had lost a valuable and loving soul.
