A Recognised PhD, Guide, Principal Scientist at CSIR- National Environment Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur Dr. A. Ramesh kumar, M.Sc, M.Ed, Ph.D. [ Applied Cheistry].

Introduction:    Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar, M.Sc, M.Ed, Ph.D [ Applied Chemistry] is a Senior Scientist, and currently he is working as a Principal Scientist at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute [ NEERI}, Nagpur with great distinction, devotion and efficacy. He is a great Scientific Researcher and his scientific initiatives in NEERI and his research contributions on pollution in air, water, and soil, deserve our regard and appreciation.  A perusal of his scientific research initiatives, findings and accomplishments will enlighten and galvanise the readers, students and young scientist with new scientific spirit and spark and will mould and galvanise them as innovative Scientists, analytical Thinkers, and good human-beings.


 

                                         Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar, M.Sc, M.Ed, Ph.D. [ Chemistry].

Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar's Parents and Birth:  Layam Pulianvilai is an idyllic village surrounded by paddy fields and coconut trees and it lies in Thovalai taluk in Kanyakuamri district.   In this beautiful village a gentleman by name Mr.Y. Asirvatham lived with his beloved wife by name Ms. Julia Jane Suseela and God blessed this couple with all the connubial blessings and this couple gave birth to a son on 29th June 1970 and they christened their infant son as, Ramesh Kumar. Mrs Julia Jane Suseela worked at the Salvation Army Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil as a Secondary grade Teacher and retired.  

Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar's Siblings: God blessed Mr. Y. Asirvatham and his wife Mrs Julia Jane Suseela with all the conjugal blessings and this couple gave birth to the following children namely:[1] Mr. A. Illango. B.A, B.T, and he is working as a Graduate Teacher at the Salvation Army High School, Valliyoor  and he is married to Ms Bhanu, M.Sc,  B.Ed,  and she is working as a P.G Assistant [Botany] in the Government Hr. Secondary School, Thittuvilai. This couple is blessed with three children namely: [a] Ms. Jane Preetha, M.Sc and she is pursuing her Ph.D in Physics and is going to successfully complete her PhD shortly, [b] Er. Joel Anderson, M.E, and he works in a private company;[2] Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar, M.Sc, Ph.D [ he is the Hero of this Article], and [3] Mr. A. Prabhakar and he works in a private company in USA and his wife Ms Shakila works as a teacher in USA and this couple is blessed with the following children namely: [a] Er..Samuel Giftson, M.Tech, and [b] Mr Beryl Giftson and he is studying in 12th Std..

Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar's Educational Track   Young Ramesh Kumar did his Primary School and High School education at the Government High School at Madhava Layam and passed his SSLC in the year 1985. After having passed his SSLC he did his 11th Std and 12th Std at the famous SLB Higher Secondary School at Nagercoil and passed his Plus Two meritoriously in the year 1987. Then he pursued his B.Sc [ Chemistry] in the Aringar Anna College, Aralvaimozhi and passed his B.Sc[ Chemistry] in 1990. After having passed his B.Sc with flying colours he pursued his M.Sc. [Chemistry] at Scott Christian College in Nagercoil and passed his M.Sc [ Chemistry ] meritoriously in 1993. Then he did his B.Ed, course in the M.S. University Tirunelveli [ Correspondence] and passed his B.Ed in the year 1994 and then pursued his M.Ed, in MS University, Tirunelveli [ Correspondence], and passed his M.Ed in the year 1995. In line with his natural thirst for knowledge he pursued his Ph.D [ Analytical Chemistry]at the University of Madras and his PhD thesis title was " Ground water hydrochemistry with special reference to Speciation of Arsenic, Chromium, and Selenium of a Suburban area of Chennai City, India". He was awarded his prestigious PhD in the year 2008.

Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar's professional Track Phase 1:  After completing his M.Sc., he joined The Salvation Army Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Nagercoil, as a Chemistry Teacher in 1993 and worked there until 1996. During this period, he completed both B.Ed. and M.Ed. and also prepared for competitive exams and interviews. Later, he was selected for the post of Senior Technical Assistant (Chemical) and joined the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Government of India, at Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. After six months, he was selected for the post of Assistant Intelligence Officer in the Intelligence Bureau and was posted at Gwalior. However, he did not join, as it was a non-technical position. After about a year, he was transferred to Chennai and continued there until 2012. He moved to Chennai in May 1997 and lived in Palavakkam.

Dr. Ramesh Kumar's Wife and Children:  Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar married S. Sheela, (B Sc), daughter of M. Sahayam Sathi,(Ex.Army) of South Karayankuzhi, on 28/08/1998. God blessed Dr. Ramesh Kumar and his beloved wife Ms. S. Sheela and this couple gave birth to two children: [a] Dr. Evangeline, M.B.B.S, and [b] Er. Steve Aldrin, B.Tech. Both of his children stood as great strength and moral support to Dr. Ramesh Kumar's higher studies and career. 

Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar's professional Track Phase 2: While working in CGWB, Chennai, he had opportunities to interact with faculty members from the University of Madras and Anna University on scientific matters. He also attended conferences and training programs, which enabled him to connect with peers and stay updated on current research. These experiences motivated him to pursue a Ph.D. as a part-time candidate in 2002, which he completed in 2007. After earning his Ph.D., he began searching for better opportunities, as CGWB had limited promotion prospects. He applied for various Scientist positions and attended several interviews. Eventually, he was selected as Scientist-C at the Indian Council of Medical Research - National Institute of Occupational Health (ICMR-NIOH), Ahmedabad. he resigned from CGWB and joined NIOH in September 2012. At that time, his children were in the 6th and 3rd standards, respectively, in Chennai. His family relocated to Ahmedabad. Initially, he attended Sunday services at the Salvation Army Church, Babunagar Corps, Ahmedabad. However, since the service was in Gujarati, He searched for an English congregation and found the Methodist Tamil Church, Ahmedabad. By then, his daughter had passed 10th standard and his son was in 7th. Although he was in a respectable position, he continued to strive for higher roles. He was later selected for the post of Senior Scientist at CSIR–National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur. As this had long been his dream workplace, he resigned from NIOH and joined NEERI in August 2016

Some Highlights on his Professional Track:  Dr. A. Ramesh Kumar worked as a Senior Technical Assistant [ Chemical] at the Southeastern Coastal Region, Besant Nagar, Chennai [ 20-05-1996 to 23-4- 2012].  Then he worked as an Assistant Chemist at the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt of India [ 24 -4- 2012 to 23--9- 2012].  Then he got a Scientist job at the National Institute of Occupational Health, ICMR, Ahmedabad and he worked in this national institute as a scientist with great devotion [ 24-9- 2012 to 15-08- 2016].  While working in this national Institute he was promoted, and he worked as Senior Scientist in this National Institute with distinction-[ 16-8- 2016 to 15-8- 2021]. In line with his lifelong dream Currently Dr. Ramesh Kumar is working at the CSIR- National Environmental Research Institute, Nagpur as a Principal Scientist with great enthusiasm, commitment and innovative efficacy.

Conclusion: As an innovative researcher Dr. Ramesh Kumar truly enjoys his current job as it involves research on pollutants in air, water, and soil. Reading scientific journals and magazines helps him to stay up to date and expand his knowledge. Since childhood, his father Mr. Y. Asirvatham and mother Mrs. Julia Jane Suseela instilled in him the habit of reading the Bible before starting any study, and he continues this practice to this day. God has granted him competent wisdom and understanding beyond many of his peers. He is often at the forefront of scientific initiatives at NEERI, which has been appreciated by the Director. of the NEERI, and the NEERI Director has entrusted him with additional responsibilities, allowing him to collaborate with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Geneva, Switzerland. He is a recognized PhD guide and currently he is guiding 6 PhD students. He currently decorates the post of Principal Scientist in NEERI, since 2021 with laudable distinction. Dr. Ramesh Kumar's research and publications have been well-received by UNEP, and he had the privilege of visiting Geneva multiple times each year for scientific meetings, as well as travelling to other countries. During his visits, he attends services at the Salvation Army Church in Geneva. The above photo was taken when he attended the Sunday Service on the 04-05-2025 at a Salvation Army Church in Geneva. God continues to bless him in his professional work and in personal life.  It is not possible to accommodate all the important aspects and chapters of his prolific real-life story within the space of this Blogpost and so I will end this Blogpost with the following sentence.
